Poulter closes the door on the Canes

By Dale Woodard on February 8, 2022.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes had designs for their third straight win.

Isaac Poulter had other plans.

The Canes were edged 2-1 by the Broncos in Western Hockey League action Saturday night in Swift Current.

The Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 26-18 – including 13 shots in the third – and while leading scorer Justin Hall was able to find a way past Poulter with 4:39 to go to cut Swift Current’s lead to one, the Broncos goaltender was unbeatable the rest of the way.

The loss drops the Hurricanes to 17-19-2-1 and puts them back into a tie with the Broncos (16-23-4-1) for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

After a scoreless first period, the Broncos broke the goose egg on a goal from Cole Nagy 10:58 into the second period.

Swift Current added to their lead 19 seconds into the third period on Connor Hvidston’s fifth goal of the season.

The Hurricanes finally found a way past Poulter with a little under five minutes to go on Hall’s 23rd goal of the season and his seventh point in the past three games, but Poulter shut the door after that.

Hurricanes goaltender Jared Picklyk stopped 16 of 18 shots in the loss.

The Canes were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Broncos were 0-for-3.

Lethbridge continues their four game road trip through Saskatchewan this week.

The Canes are in Moose Jaw to face the Warriors Wednesday and head to Saskatoon Friday and Prince Albert Saturday.

The Hurricanes are back home Feb. 15 when the Warriors come to town.
