One streak ends, another continues for Kodiaks

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team’s winning streak came to an end last weekend, but the Kodiaks men’s team’s winning clip continued in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference play.
On the volleyball court, the Kodiaks men’s and women’s teams each went 1-1 against the SAIT Trojans Saturday and Sunday in Calgary.
In a clash of the top-two teams in the ACAC South Division, the Kodiaks women were downed 71-65 by the Calgary St. Mary’s Lightning Friday night at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium before dropping a close 59-57 decision in the rematch Saturday in Calgary.
The losses end the Kodiaks nine-game winning streak and puts them at 10-3, good for second in the South, two points back of the 11-1 Lightning.
The Kodiak men upped their winning streak to seven games thanks to 95-64 and 75-69 wins over the Lightning Friday and Saturday, respectively, to move to 11-2, good for first place in the South and four points up on the 9-2 SAIT Trojans.
In the women’s basketball game Friday, the Lighting jumped out to a 21-3 lead after the first quarter on their way to the win.
Courtney Deemter led the Kodiaks with 22 points, while Kirsten Barwegen had the double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Natalie Heninger added 10 points and five assists for Lethbridge
The Kodiaks led the Lightning 20-12 after the first quarter on Saturday, but were outscored 14-5 in the second quarter.
Deemter hit for 24 points to pace the Kodiaks. Matlin Jacobs and Barwegen added 16 and 12 points, respectively. Barwegen added her second double double in as many nights with 11 rebounds.
Heninger had five steals.
On the men’s side, the Kodiaks opened up a commanding 53-31 lead at the half in Friday’s opener.
Five Kodiaks hit double digits, led by Orin Porter’s 22 points. Paycen Blackmore drained 17 points, while Dawson Atwood came off the bench for 13.
Jack-Henry Fox-Grey and Leon Schenker added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Tomoya Owens pulled in 12 rebounds for Lethbridge.
On Saturday in Calgary, Chris Schlauwitz stepped up with a 24-point performance to complete the Kodiaks sweep.
Porter knocked down another 15 points and Atwood added 12.
The Kodiaks head to Caronport, Sask. Saturday to take on the Briercrest Clippers.
In volleyball, the Kodiaks men’s and women’s teams started the weekend with wins on Saturday, but were unable to complete the sweep Sunday.
The women’s team won 3-1 Saturday, but were swept 3-0 by the Trojans Sunday and are now 8-4 and in second place in the South, two points up on the Ambrose Lions.
The Kodiaks men went five sets both nights, winning 3-2 Saturday before losing Sunday.
They are now 8-5 and tied for third in the South with SAIT.
In the women’s game Saturday, the Kodiaks prevailed 3-1 (25-20. 19-25, 25-18, 25-20), led by Jamie Brown’s 18 kills.
Mack Lewicki added seven kills, 17 digs and three service aces, while Elyse Doble had 12 digs.
On Sunday, the Trojans grabbed the split with a 3-0 win (25-18, 27-25, 25-21).
Lewicki had 10 kills and 13 digs and Brown added 11 digs.
Both men’s games went the distance.
The Kodiaks took the first night (25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-8) as Adam Revet hammered 12 kills and Nolan Moes added 11 and six service aces.
Malcolm Fisher added 10 digs for Lethbridge.
Sunday’s rematch also went five sets, but this time the Kodiaks fell in five sets (25-17, 22-25, 18-25, 27-25, 12-15).
Cameron Piers had 15 kills. Moes had 13 kills and 11 digs and Jackson Gaehring added 12 kills and 17 digs.
Fisher chipped with 15 digs.
The Kodiaks have two opponents this week.
They host the Briercrest Clippers Thursday at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
The women’s game is at 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, the top-ranked Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and Kings pay a visit.
The Queens are 14-0, while the Kings are 10-4.
The women’s game goes at 2 p.m. The men follow at 4 p.m.
