Pronghorns women’s basketball team battling for second place

By Dale Woodard on February 11, 2022.

Keeping their eight-game winning streak going won’t be the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns’ women’s basketball team’s only order of business this weekend.

The Horns – along with the men’s team – are in Calgary to face the Dinos (7-5) in Canada West action Friday and Saturday.

For the Horns women, second place in the Central Division is also on the line as the 8-4 squad sit one game up on the Dinos, but it was Calgary who swept the season-opening weekend at the end of October in Lethbridge.

Meanwhile, the 4-6 Pronghorns men look to climb the standings from their current position of fourth place in the Central Division as they tangle with the 9-3 Dinos.

Heading into the final two weekends, the Pronghorns women continue to roll following a road sweep of the MacEwan Griffins last weekend in Edmonton.

The Pronghorns have the sixth-best offence in the conference, scoring 71.2 points per game and sit in seventh place defensively with 65.1 points allowed per game.

Horns guard Jessica Haenni leads the Pronghorns in scoring this season, averaging 13.9 points per game.

Haily Weaver and Savannah McMahon are also averaging double digits in points this season with 11.2 and 10.9, respectively.

The Pronghorns men had last weekend off after the Griffins were unable to field a full team due to COVID, postponing the games.

Currently in fourth place in the Central Division and just behind the 5-9 Mount Royal Cougars, the Horns will look to make a move up the standings.

In their last action, the Pronghorns split a home series with the Cougars.

The Pronghorns are ninth in the conference in team scoring at 78.9 points per game and are eighth defensively, allowing 75.1 points against.

Angelo Mbituyimana has come off the bench to lead the Horns with 13.9 points per game. De’Andrae Pierre is second with 12.4 points, while Moreau Darlington and Jeff Rodehutskors have chipped in with 11.5 and 11 points, respectively.

Game time tonight for the women’s game is 6 p.m. with the men to follow at 8 p.m.

The women’s game goes at 5 p.m. Saturday. The men play at 7 p.m.
