Blades draw home win over Hurricanes

By Dale Woodard on February 12, 2022.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are once again tied for eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Canes were downed 4-1 by the Saskatoon Blades in Western Hockey League action Friday night in Saskatoon.

Hurricanes forward Tyson Laventure scored his seventh goal of the season and second as a Hurricane to cut the Blades lead to 2-1 1:13 into the third, but Saskatoon restored their two-goal lead a little over six minutes later on a tally from Trevor Wong on their way to the win.

With the loss, the Hurricanes fall to 18-20-2-1 and back into a tie for eighth place in the East with the Swift Current Broncos, who beat the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-3 in overtime Friday night in Brandon to improve to 17-23-4-1.

On Friday in Saskatoon, the Blades scored twice in a span of 5:54 to snap a scoreless tie on goals from Brandon Lisowsky and Jayden Wiens – on the power play – for a lead the hosts didn’t relinquish.

Laventure made it 2-1 early in the third before Wong restored the Blades two-goal cushion and Egor Sidorov added one more with 2:26 to go.

Wong and Lisowsky each had one assist for two points each.

The Blades outshot the Hurricanes 35-30.

The Hurricanes were 0-for-3 on the power play, while Saskatoon went 2-for-3 on the man advantage.

Playing his second game back after sitting out eight games with a lower body injury, Hurricanes goaltender Bryan Thomson stopped 31 of 35 shots, while Blades veteran goaltender Nolan Maier made 29 saves.

The Hurricanes wrap up their four-game trek through Saskatchewan when they face the Raiders tonight in Prince Albert at 6 p.m. local time.

The Canes return to the Enmax Centre Tuesday night when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes makeup game with the Warriors Thursday at the Enmax Centre has been postponed to later in the season as part of a league-wide rescheduling exercise

Fans are asked to hold on to their game tickets, which will be honoured when a new date is set.
