Horns get final tune up before Canada West Championships

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns track and field team continues to tune up for the Canada West Championships.

This weekend, the team will head to where the championship will eventually be held as the Horns lace up for the Bison Classic this weekend in Winnipeg.

The Canada West Championships will be hosted by the University of Manitoba March 18-20.

After two meets, the Pronghorns have multiple athletes ranked in the top-10 in the Canada West heading into this weekend’s meet.

Andreas Troschke is the highest ranked Pronghorn, sitting first in the Canada West in the weight throw. He is also ranked second in the national university rankings in the event.

Brayden Klippenstein sits second in Canada West weight throw and fourth in the U SPORTS rankings, while Xavier Crosby sits fourth in Canada West and eighth in U SPORTS.

Parker Allen is currently ranked ninth in Canada West weight throw.

The Pronghorns also have three athletes ranked in the jumping events.

Lauchlan Irish is second in the Canada West triple jump and third in the high jump rankings. He is also ranked third nationally in the triple jump.

Clayton Wong is one spot behind Irish in the Canada West triple jump rankings, Jake Jessup is ranked sixth and Ryan Kettlewell is 10th in the conference in triple jump.

On the women’s side, Mackenzie Kennedy is the top-ranked Pronghorn, sitting second in the Canada West ranking in the triple jump and is ninth in the U SPORTS rankings.

Fellow jumper Makayla Dickinson is one spot behind Kennedy in the Canada West rankings.

In the throwing circle, four Pronghorns are ranked among the top-10 in Canada West.

Caitlyn Bailes is third in the weight throw, while Jinaye Shomachuk is in fourth in both the weight throw and shot put events.

Among all of U SPORTS, Bailes and Shomachuk are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively.

Naomi Klassen, Madeline Szabo and Myah Sluik are currently ranked fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Canada West weight throw rankings.

Sprinter Kimoya Edwards rounds out the Pronghorns currently ranked in the Canada West top-10, sitting ninth in the 60 metres.
