The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns earned seven championship medals at the Canada West Championships in Winnipeg over the weekend.
The highlighted Pronghorns at the championship were in the throwers category, as five of six medals were taken home in the weight throw events from both genders.
On Day 1, U of L Swept the podium as Andreas Troschke defended his 2019 gold medal after throwing 18.16 metres. Troschke’s teammates Xavier Crosby won silver after throwing a distance of 17.38 metres and Brayden Klippenstein took home bronze with a toss of 17.37 metres.
As for the U of L women’s athletes, Caitlyn Bailes won a silver medal with a throw of 16.78 metres, while first-year thrower Jinaye Shomachuk finished with a bronze medal with a toss of 16.63 metres.
Shomachuk just missed out on a second medal as she finished fourth in a shot put event.
Horns freshman Lauchlin Irish claimed two silver medals in the triple jump and high jump respectively in his first Canada West Championship.
Irish set a new personal best in the high jump after clearing two metres, which was the same height as the gold medal winning University of Alberta athlete, but had more missed attempts than his competitor.
The list will be released today for those athletes that will attend the U Sports Championships at the University of New Brunswick in a couple week’s time.
Women’s basketball
The women’s basketball team fell in the Canada West Final Four Championship bronze medal game 92-60 to the University of Regina Cougars on Saturday in Saskatoon.
