Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Alex Thacker one-timed a pass from Justin Hall for his 14th goal of the season just 19 seconds into overtime to beat the Calgary Hitmen 3-2 on the road in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.
Nolan Bentham collected the other assist
The Hurricanes got the scoring going in the contest as Brayden Edwards reached double digits for goals as he notched his 10th of the season on the powerplay at 8:46 of the opening frame.
Joe Arntsen and Logan Wormald drew the assists on the goal.
Bentham gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead on his fifth of the season from Corson Hopwo at 11:30.
However, Lethbridge saw that lead disappear in the second period as Calgary’s Sean Tschigerl scored his 23rd of the season at 11:40 followed by a powerplay marker by Riley Fiddler-Schultz at 18:27.
That was all the scoring in regulation until overtime.
Calgary outshot Lethbridge 31-26.
Lethbridge went 1-for-4 and Calgary went 1-for-2 on the powerplay.
The ‘Canes finished the regular season with a 33-30-4-1 record.
The Hurricanes will now shift their attention to Game 1 of the WHL Playoffs which begins Thursday night in Edmonton at 7 p.m. and Game 2 will go Saturday at 7 p.m. also in Edmonton.
The series will then shift back to the Enmax Centre for Game 3 on April 26 and Game 4 on April 28 with both start times at 7 p.m.
If necessary, Game 5 will go April 30 in Edmonton, Game 6 is slated for May 1 back in Lethbridge and Game 7 would be May 3 in Edmonton.
