The Lethbridge Cudas Junior B lacrosse team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend to start the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season.
The season opened in Didsbury on Saturday night with a 13-9 win over the Mountainview Mavericks, before edging the Rockyview Silvertips 12-10 in their home opener on Sunday afternoon at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
Captain Jaxson Geddes led the way with six goals and an assist in the win over the Silvertips.
“I mean we all just stayed as one group,” said Geddes.
“I think that we were all on the same page. Obviously, third period, you saw we were all pretty fatigued coming off a game last night as well driving back on the bus.”
Geddes thought the team played fantastic through the first two periods with moving the ball.
“We’re a small team, but we’re quick, we’re fast and we know that,” said Geddes.
“But today, our offence was clicking. We actually worked as one unit which was nice to see, defence was talking and hitting slides.”
Head coach Darren Andre said it’s a great feeling to start the season 2-0.
“We’ve set ourselves up very nice,” said Andre.
“We’ve got two divisional games next weekend. So everybody is looking up at us at this point and that’s the start we wanted.”
Andre was happy with the win, despite a 10-6 lead almost slipping away in the third period.
“The guys held on,” he said.
“We got it done in the last 20. There’s lots to work on — so call that a blessing. In the third, it gave lots of places to go from here because it was early season sloppy. Now, everybody is on that same boat. Nobody has played games in two years, but it’s something that we need to tighten up.”
Houston Eakins scored three goals, followed by Mark Federkeil’s two-goal output and Devon Robichaud’s single tally rounded out the Cudas offence on the afternoon.
Lethbridge will look to make it three wins in a row when they host the Calgary Junior Mounties on Saturday afternoon, 2 p.m., at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
