As they get set for the Western Hockey League Prospects Draft today, the Lethbridge Hurricanes picked up a few items south of the border on Wednesday.
Picking fourth and 41st overall at the U.S. Priority Draft, the Canes selected goaltender Harrison Boettiger and defenseman Clarke Nehmens, respectively.
Boettiger, 14, who hails Wheatridge, Colorado spent the 2021-2022 season with Shattuck St. Mary’s 14U AAA club.
In 26 games, the six-foot, 150-pound netminder posted a perfect 24-0-0 record with a 1.12 goals against average and a .948 save percentage.
The Hurricanes then selected Nehmens with their 41st pick.
Also 14, Nehmens – a product of Chino Hills, California – played in 51 games during the 2021-2022 season with Shattuck St. Mary’s 14U AAA club, posting 12 goals and 44 points.
The five-foot-10, 165-pound right-shot defenseman had 21 points (14 goals and seven assists) with the Anaheim Jr. Ducks 13U AAA in 2020-2021.
“We believe we’ve added two really talented players to our group today,” said Hurricanes general manager Peter Anholt in a statement. “We’ve heard really good things about Boettinger from scouts and goalie coaches that we’ve talked to and are excited to add him to our group. With Nehmens, we like his ability and think there is some upside while he already has a good frame.
“We are excited to add both to our organization and are excited to see them develop.”
“It is an honour to be drafted by the Hurricanes fourth overall,” added Boettiger in a statement. “I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Lethbridge family and making a run at the Memorial Cup in 2026.”
The Hurricanes now gear up for today’s Prospects Draft, beginning at 10 a.m.
Lethbridge has the 11th overall pick and also has 12 more picks after that, choosing in the second round (33rd overall), twice in the third round (48th and 55th), sixth round (121st), seventh round (147th), ninth round (187th), 10th round (209th), 11th round (231st), 12th round (253rd), 13th round (275th), 14th round (297th) and the 15th round (319th).
