The Alberta Junior Rugby Association is hosting its second annual Try Rugby event today at the Lethbridge Rugby Club.
“It’s a free event hosted to encourage people to come out and try rugby, kind of dip their toes in the sport and see what it’s all about,” said Savanna Collison, AJRA youth development coordinator for the south.
Kids will come out to the event and be split into age groups of five to 11 from 1- 2 p.m. and 12-17 from 2-3 p.m.
“They’re going to come out and participate in a bunch of games, different drills and skill activities,” she said.
“We just really want the kids to come out and have fun.”
Collison said sports in the south are so big and getting new participants in sports like rugby is just super important.
“We’re trying to grow the sport of rugby,” said Collison.
“So starting at a younger age, especially in the youth, is huge for rugby because we’re going to get them to participate in a sport and then they’re going to carry it on.”
There is no registration required for the event and the kids just show up and participate.
Kids are required to bring a water bottle and runners.
Collison, her colleague Keegan Brantner and LRC volunteers will be running the event.
