There were no shortage of learning opportunities for the Lethbridge FC women’s team on Saturday afternoon in a 5-0 defeat to Calgary Foothills WFC on home turf.
“I’ll be honest, it was tough game,” said Olivia DePasquale.
“They have a very good team and really skilled and know how to play together well. But honestly, coming together with the call ups we had and a team we never really played with before, I think everyone stepped up really well. We have a lot of younger girls coming in and they stepped up to plate and played really hard. So I can appreciate that from them as well.”
DePasquale said they can learn from positioning.
“You know they were playing a really weird formation,” she said.
“So we definitely had to learn how to adjust quickly to that. You know having defenders come up and help defend in the midfield was definitely taking a lot of their chances away, so that was a great learning opportunity and just the speed of the game, having to turn quickly and make the quick and easy passes instead of trying to make a pretty play.”
The girls are hanging on to a playoff spot in fourth place.
“I know it’s something that I think LFC and AMSL (Alberta Major Soccer League) hasn’t seen in a really long time,” she said.
“So it’d be pretty cool to get that experience even if it doesn’t go our way. It would just be cool to be a part of a team that hasn’t really gotten that far.”
DePasquale is the Lethbridge College women’s soccer team captain and is leaning on her leadership skills to guide the team.
“Obviously coming into a team I never played with before, I like to sit back first and see how everyone adjusts and then as I get more comfortable, asserting my opinion isn’t really a problem for me,” she said.
