The Lethbridge Rugby Club men’s team are one step closer to bringing home a Calgary city championship as they beat the Calgary Irish 43-15 Saturday on home turf.
“It was a great feeling for the team,” said LRC captain Michael May.
May thought the strength of the team was supporting each other and being there as a team.
“We’ve had problems of being individual players in the past and once we finally play as a team and play together then we usually come out on top,” said May.
“So it showed today.”
May said today (Saturday) was actually a good day for our game plan.
“We didn’t have too many problems with it as you see with the score,” he said.
“There’s a couple lapses but we’re never going to be able to get rid of all of them.”
The key for the team is to stay healthy for the squad and try to get all players on the same page as they head into the city championship.
“Great feeling to finish the season undefeated at home,” said head coach Ryan McKeown.
“A lot of work went into the season and that was huge motivation to push us to get the win.”
LRC’s city championship opponent will be the Calgary Canucks on Sept. 10.
“If we show up focused and ready to play, our chances are good to come away with a win,” said McKeown.
“Our team, at its best, is top of the league. But we need to make sure we play a full 80 minutes of quality rugby and keep the mistakes to a minimum.”
McKeown added, “I would say the result is in our control depending on how play.”
The winner will meet an Edmonton Union team in the provincial championship on Sept. 17.
