The Lethbridge Hurricanes U18AAA Hurricanes gave up a goal with 2:40 to go in the game to Jackson Maloney of the Calgary North Stars to lose 2-1 in their home opener on Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
The Canes Deegan Kinniburgh opened the scoring 5:26 into the second before the North Stars Carson Wright replied at 12:37.
“Well, you know, it’s a really good league, and you have to play 60 minutes,” said Canes head coach Sean Gillam.
“We played about 45-50 minutes and that was the difference in the game. They’re a good team over there, they play hard, and they stuck to their game plan. It could have gone either way and sometimes that’s just the way bounces go.”
Gillam felt while the team got a lot of pucks on net, they missed the mark too.
“Like you get good scoring chances, you have to bear down and hit the net, said Gillam.
“And we weren’t hitting the net and we made a couple of plays. We’re working out some things and getting some of the bugs out early and we’ll be fine.”
Gillam said it was good, when it came to the atmosphere of the home opener.
“The parents had a tailgate going on and I think the kids came out with a bunch of energy and they played hard,” said Gillam.
The Canes rebounded in game two of the season on Sunday with a 7-1 win over Sherwood Park.
Josh Evaschesen led the way with a hat trick for Canes, Kinniburgh added two goals and Carter Cunningham and Mahki Carriere supplied one goal apiece in the win.
The Hurricanes will now head north to Edmonton for two games this weekend.

The Hawks opened up the trip with a 4-1 against the Southgate Lions.
Hayden Iron Shirt and Rylan NG scored two goals each in the win.
The Hawks continued to soar into the second game of the trip as they beat the Canadian CAC Volvo of Edmonton 9-5.
