Canes split weekend games in Saskatchewan

The Lethbridge Hurricanes split their mini two-game Saskatchewan road trip over the weekend.

The Canes needed four rounds of the shootout to knock off the Regina Pats 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Tyson Zimmer scored the shootout winner on a beautiful backhand deke.

Jett Jones opened the scoring for the Canes 12:49 into the first period from Zimmer and Nolan Bentham.

Hayden Smith pocketed his first goal of the season to make the contest 2-0 Lethbridge at the 16:27 mark of the opening frame.

Smith scored his second goal of the game at 11:32 of the second period to pad the Canes lead to 3-0.

However, it was after that goal that the Hurricanes squandered their three goal lead in the third period.

The Pats’ Cole Dubinsky scored just 2:05 into the third period, Luke Bateman bulged the twine at 8:15 and Tanner Howe tied the game at 9:34 to tie the game and set up the overtime and shootout.

The Canes held highly touted NHL prospect Connor Bedard to an assist in the contest.

Harrison Meneghin kicked out 21 of 24 Regina shots.

The win comes on the heels of a 4-3 loss in Moose Jaw on Saturday night.

Anton Astashevich got Lethbridge out to the early 1-0 lead 7:36 into the game.

But it was the Warriors who scored the next three goals.

Eric Alaire scored at 10:28 of the second period to tie the game, before Ben Riche put Moose Jaw ahead 2-1 1:09 into the third and Nathan Piling scoring the home side’s third goal at 5:32 of the final frame.

Alex Thacker would bring the Canes to within one goal with his third goal of the season at 10:28 of the third period.

The Warriors Atley Calvert doubled their lead to 4-2 at 12:07 of the third period.

Canes captain Joe Arntsen brought the score to 4-3 at 14:53.

Jared Picklyk stopped 30 Warrior shots on the night.

The Hurricanes record sits at 4-5 after the trip.

Lethbridge will host the Saskatoon Blades Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre.
