The Lethbridge Headwater Hurricanes U17 AAA team were on the cusp of winning their first game of the season on Sunday.
However, that opportunity was dashed when Parkland Saints’ Jackson Ward walked in just 3:43 into overtime and beat Canes goalie Dylan Koller glove side to give the visitors the 2-1 win at the Logan Boulet Arena.
“Today was a hard one,” said head coach Geoff Oster.
“I didn’t think we deserved to lose that game. I thought we deserved to win it and we worked hard enough to win it. And like I said to them in the room, hockey is a game of mistakes and mistakes are made all the time by both teams. But those that capitalize on the mistake are the ones that end up coming out on top. Unfortunately, we just didn’t capitalize on the mistakes they made.”
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals in the second period as Ethan Hogman scored at 10:55 and Connor Chapman tied it for the Canes at 17:49.
Oster feels the team is trending in the right direction.
“Our effort is getting better every time that we go on the ice and the kids are really working hard,” said Oster.
“We like the direction we are going there, and really when you think about it, for some of these kids this is a step up from what they’re used to. We’re really happy with what we have going on right now.”
The team lost 4-3 to the Calgary (NW) Flames on Saturday at home.
The scoring began in the second period as Tavish Forbes opened the scoring at the 2:11 mark before Calgary scored two straight off the sticks of Matthew Balderston and Ty Pannett.
Lethbridge’s Carter Dersch and Cassius Day Chief scored at 14:20 and 14:47 respectively to give the Hurricanes lead going into the third.
The Flames scored two in the third to preserve the win.
The Headwater Hurricanes record sits 0-3-1 as they head up to Edmonton for two games this weekend.
U15AAA
The Val Matteoti Golden Hawks did not have much go their way in an 8-3 defeat to the Calgary NW Flames on Saturday at Nicholas Sheran Arena.
“Yeah, it’s never good when you lose,” said assistant coach Dalton Sward.
“It’s a team sport and you’ve got to play like a team.”
Sward agreed the team was behind the eight ball early.
“It’s never good when you chase a team,” he said.
“You come out behind the eight ball like you said and you try and do too much.
Hayden Iron Shirt scored two goals and Rylan Ng scored in the loss.
Nathan Crellin led the way with five goals for the Flames, while Joshua Newell, Cash Martin and Easton Laplante supplied single tallies in the win.
U18AAA
The U18AAA squad split their games in Calgary over the weekend.
The Canes edged the Calgary Royals 5-4 on Saturday.
Makhi Carriere, Carter Cunningham, Maddox Mason, Dayton Tailfeathers and Josh Evaschesan scored in the victory.
Lethbridge followed with a 6-1 loss to the Calgary Buffaloes on Sunday.
Deegan Kinnibrugh scored the lone goal in the loss.
