Local Volleyball Club introduces Doubles League

The Lethbridge Volleyball Club is introducing a new U13 Superstars Doubles League next month.

“Basically it’s geared towards those kids that maybe played basketball or other sports and couldn’t commit to club volleyball, but would like to play volleyball again in the fall or maybe  try-out for the first time in the fall and haven’t really played before, “said Ard Biesheuvel, LVC’s director of coaching.

“And so we just want to give them an opportunity to play. And the nice thing with doubles is that you’re going to touch the ball anytime the ball comes over the net. There’s only two of you, so you have no choice, and so lots of contacts and yeah we’re looking forward just to seeing them (in) that kind of development that they’re going to have in that format.”

The hope is the players go back to their school teams and have a high level of knowledge of the game and maybe find a passion for the game and come play club volleyball in future years.

Players will get the opportunity to a half an hour of instruction and working on skills  before having a full hour of doubles play.

“Well, predominately because that’s sort of when kids start playing in school,” said Biesheuvel, on the age range choice.

“Like the Grade 6, 7, 8s is when kids start playing volleyball in the schools. There is now a little  bit of an elementary school program. But as far as rep teams and things like that, that generally happens in Grade 6 (and) is when they start sort of trying out. So here, you’ve got kids that are either that have just been in Grade 6 and moving into Grade 7, or kids that are moving into Grade 6 next year. We just want to give them a little of bit an edge when they go and try-out for their teams and had some experience playing volleyball rather than just going in and learning the game in try-outs.”

Current LVC players in the older groups will help coach with Biesheuvel.

There will be eight sessions at the Block at 4309 8th Avenue North beginning on March 17.
