The LCI Rams senior girls rugby team opened  their season with a convincing 66-10 win over the W.R. Myers Rebels on Tuesday at the Lethbridge Rugby Club.

“Really good,” said Rams head coach Samantha Wright.

“I think we started out last year playing against Taber and they kind of kicked our butts. So it felt  really nice to turn around and get a really good game in and take it back from them.”

Wright thought the green and gold were very cohesive throughout the game.

“Everyone worked as a group (and) there was (a) lot of communication,” said Wright.

“We had a key player go down (Madison Kutsch) about half way through and a girl (Sloane Hirsche) had to step in and play a position she’s never played before and she absolutely crushed it. So that says a lot about the team, that they were able to rally around an injury and keep going.”

Wright has been training the girls a lot.

“I’ve been  running them a lot,” she said.

“They complain about it. But told them they’d appreciate it once we start having games like this. So yeah they were ready to go.”

The Rams will try and focus on the positives this season.

“I told them anything that they felt (was) negative, we’re going to forget about it (and) coaches will deal with that,” said Wright.

“We’ll give them what they need to work on atpractice. They can keep focusing on the positives and yeah we’ll keep working together as a team. I think we have a really big advantage in the backs. I think we have a really strong back group. Our forwards are going to keep us in the game and our backs are going to win by a lot.”

The goal is to make it to provincials.
