The LCI Rams senior high school baseball team started the season with two postponed games due to weather, before finally delivering the first pitch of the year on Wednesday night at Spitz Stadium.
The delay appeared to be well worth it as the Rams thumped the Raymond Comets 17-3.
“(It’s) always good to beat Raymond, one of our rivals,” said Rams coach Jesse Sawyer.
“We didn’t know what to expect because they weren’t in a league last year. So we came in with full expectations and our guys played well today. (It was) really nice to see no errors out in the field, we took care of the baseball, we threw strikes for the most part and we had some nice hitting in there today. So it was a really good team effort today from everybody.”
Sawyer liked how the team took care of the baseball.
“Like windy day (and) easy to drop some fly balls,” said Sawyer.
“And we caught all of our flyballs, we took care of our ground balls and our hitters were on today. So it was good to see.”
Sawyer thought starting pitcher Tye Carrier and hitters set the tone for the Rams in the game.
“He gave us two (innings of) zeros and then our hitters ,” said Sawyer.
“Hitters were really good today.”
Kieran Inaba had four hits in the game and was a home run away from the cycle.
“He’s in my three hole, and he’s our centrefielder and he should be a hitter for us all year I’m thinking ,hopefully anyways,” said Sawyer.
Last year was Sawyer’s first year coaching high school baseball and thought it was a learning curve for him heading into this season.
“I learned that we have to come with a good energy every day,” said Sawyer.
“We’ve got to come with you know the expectation that we’re going to have a baseball game every single day. And I think last year we took a couple of games for granted and we lost. So this year, I made sure we are going to be prepared for every game and we’re going to go out and give a good effort.”
Sawyer wants to see his team limit the walks and take care of the baseball if they want to see success.
Up next for the Rams is two games next week against Kate Andrews and Chinook respectively.
