Lethbridge Hurricanes U13AA goalie Oliver Skog is sharing the net with Airdrie’s Kelvin Gemlin for the South Black team during this week’s at Hockey Alberta’s Prospects Cup.
The Prospects Cup allows for second year U13 athletes, coaches, trainers and administrators the chance to discover the qualities of competitive hockey through a well-organized regional camp and a select team competition.
“It’s pretty exciting,” said Skog.
“I’m looking forward to playing in the tournament.”
As for the competition, Skog said it’s going to be pretty challenging and difficult.
“(I want) just to be ready before the games,” said Skog, on preparation.
Skog is riding a high going into this tournament after the Canes won the U13AA provincial banner last month and wants to go in with a high confidence.
“(And) just to work hard and just do your best,” said Skog.
Skog is looking forward to meeting new people, making memories and having a fun time.
He will be joined at the event with fellow Hurricanes teammates Keagan Grant, who will be on the same team, and goalie Chase Nielson who will be on South Gold.
Skog earned a roster spot after competing against 24 goalies in camp.
“A good attitude and then someone who works hard,” said Skog, on what coaches were looking for in the goalies.
The Prospect Cup goes from May 11-14 in Red Deer.
The top-40 athletes from each regional camp made up two team from each camp.
South Black lost their first game 9-2 to Calgary White on Thursday.
Gamlin got the start and saved 33-of 42 shots.
