The Regina Red Sox scored seven runs from the sixth inning on to defeat the Lethbridge Bulls 9-1 on Friday at Spitz Stadium.
“Yeah, I mean I think they pulled away late,” said Josh Burgmann, Bulls pitching coach.
“But I think (we) kind of weren’t ready to go right away and that’s kind of just what happened today. We weren’t ready to go early and then we lost it late. We couldn’t make some plays when we needed to keep ourselves in the game ,and you know that (is) kind of just the sum … of what’s been going on right now for us this year. It’s been you know we have a good game and then we kind of lay an egg the next game . So we (have) got to find a way to kind of clean that up.”
The Red Sox scored the game’s first run when Michael Zinter hit a one-out single to score Jackson Alaniz in the second inning.
There were no runs scored until the fifth inning when the Bulls Joey Marcinkiewicz scored on the Red Sox’s catcher throwing error to third base to tie the game 1-1.
The Red Sox started to pull away from the Bulls in the sixth inning.
Regina’s Easton Romero scored an error by the Bulls left fielder to make the score 2-1.
Kyle Revere hit a single to score Alaniz to make the score 3-1 for the Sox.
An Anthony Sharkas double in the seventh scored Mike Piazza for Regina’s fourth run of the game.
Regina continued to pour it on in the eighth inning, as Revere hit a single to score Romero and make the score 5-1.
Revere scored Regina’s sixth run in the same inning on a wild pitch by Bulls pitcher Shaye McTavish.
Regina tacked on three more runs in the ninth to close out the scoring.
“Overall, I just think we all didn’t have our best stuff tonight (on) both parts of the field,” said Marcinkiewicz.
“(I) made some errors on my part and it just wasn’t Bulls ball overall. So we (have) got to come out next time and show what we normally have.”
A notable struggle in the game was the Bulls leaving nine runners stranded on the bags.
“You know offences go through it at times,” said Burgmann.
“ I think, you know we have a really talented group offensively. I think it’s just a matter of sticking to an approach that works for us as a group and I think you know we’ll get there eventually. But, you know, we’re working through it right now and I think eventually we’ll get there. But you know it’s a process.”
Regina had 14 hits and the Bulls mustered five hits on the night.
The Bulls (11-9) will host the Weyburn Beavers (5-14) tonight at 7:05 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
