Nate Danielson scored 3:53 into overtime to lift the Brandon Wheat Kings over the Lethbridge Hurricanes 1-0 on Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre.
Rylen Roersma and Charlie Elick notched the assists on Danielson’s overtime winner.
The game turned out to be a goaltending duo between the Hurricanes’ Harrison Meneghin and the Wheat Kings Carson Bjarnason who faced 34 and 36 shots respectively.
“Well both goalies were excellent,” said Canes assistant coach Matt Anholt to Dustin Forbes of 106.7 Rock.
“I think both teams would be really happy with how they were defensively. Obviously both teams penalty kills were really good as well. So I mean, it was just a good defensive hockey game and both teams struggled to score, but I think a lot of it had to do with the goaltending.”
Anholt thought the team was happy with their game on the night.
“ I mean, obviously , Danielson’s one of the best players in the league, if not the best skater in the league,” said Anholt to Forbes.
“(Brett) Hyland’s an elite player , (Roger) McQueen and (Dominik)Petr … they’ve been excellent as well. So they have a lot of depth scoring going plus they got maybe one of the best players in the league. So I thought as a team we did a great job against those guys and then our penalty kill did a good job because I mean that’s obviously a task. And I was a little bit nervous for a while when we were taking a little bit too many penalties and obviously we did a good job there and Harry (Meneghin) was excellent in that regard as well.”
Lethbridge went 0-for-5 and Brandon went 0-for-6 on the powerplay.
The Hurricanes will look to get back on track when they hit the road for two games beginning Friday night against the Moose Jaw Warriors and then against the Regina Pats on Saturday night.
