Lethbridge Hurricane forwards Brayden Edwards and Miguel Marques had very productive summers and hope to transition what they learned into training camp and into ultimately having great seasons with the club.
Marques was selected by the Nashville Predators in the third round of this year’s NHL Entry Draft in Las Vegas
“I got to go to Vegas for the draft, so that was something I’ve never seen before,” said Marques. “ then obviously my family being there … it was pretty special to be with them. Obviously I couldn’t do that without my coaches …, my teammates and kind of all the hard work that they’ve done with me to help me get to that point.”
Marques then headed to Tennessee for development camp.
“There was a lot of good players there and a lot of good guys that came from the Western League,” said Marques.
“So I was kind of comfortable knowing some guys (and) playing against them and playing with them there.”
Marques said I think it’s another eye opener.
“It’s the pro level where there’s a lot of older guys and guys that are fighting for jobs,” said Marques.
“So it’s kind of just an eye opener to see where I fit in … and what I need to really improve on in the summers and throughout the season to kind of get to that level.”
Marques will attend the Predators main camp.
Marques wants to lead by example throughout the duration of Canes camp, start the season strong and hopes this the team makes a push this season.
“Obviously the past couple of years haven’t gon e the way we wanted to,” said Marques.
“So I think this year is the year to get things done, I think that’s kind of the biggest thing for our group and myself.”
As for Edwards he was invited and attended the Detroit Red Wings development camp and will be attending the rookie tournament.
“I think it was huge just being able to skate with some of the top players in the world,” said Edwards.
“Yeah, (you) really test your skills against some of the top players and see how they treat their bodies on and off the ice. So I think it’s important to see.”
Edwards thought everyone’s mindset was good heading into the first day of training camp.
“Everyone seems really dialled in for the season,” said Edwards, said prior to camp on Wednesday.
“I think just sticking to all the systems Bill’s put together. I think it’ll give us a good edge towards the other teams.”
Edwards’ focus is on getting bigger, stronger and faster.
“My goal is to play pro after this year,” said Edwards.
“I know it’s going to take a big step. So ultimately just making sure I’m one of the bigger, stronger (and) faster guys in the league, so I can set myself up in a good spot.”
