The LCI Rams varsity football team kick off a new season today feeling prepared for the challenge ahead.

“I feel like we’re prepared and we’re ready to go, “ said Darren Majeran, Rams head coach.

“I think in a lot of ways we’re ahead of where we’ve been at the same time but to be satisfied, not even close. We’re not where we want to be yet no matter what.”

The team’s strength will be speed with their secondary, wide receivers, running backs and linemen.

“We’re pretty good in all phases of the game I’d say,” said Majeran.

Majeran has been impressed with his defence.

“So I think aggression is one of those things that we like to see, that a kid just has, and we have some of that on (our) D-line as well,” said Majeran.

A high level of execution on offence will be key for the Rams success in games.

“If we can move the ball, stay out of our own head, stay out of our own way, I think that’s always important this time (of) year,” said Majeran.

Owen Parker will lead the way at the quarterback position in his first year at the varsity level.

“He’s a competitor,” said Majeran.

“So he’s a fun kid  to watch. I think he’s going to do really well for us this year. We’re excited for him; we’re excited for the next three years with him. Like every other player on our team, like every other coach on the team, he’s a work in progress, so we’re all going to grow together and definitely rally around him.”

Ram player Nathan Morris said preparations have been good.

“We had a three-day camp  … at the school where we practiced and we got together as a team to have like better connections,” said Morris.

Morris thinks their success will come with the running game.

LCI is playing in  a 5A school provincially ranked league and in the newly formed Southland Football League with Catholic Central, Chinook and McCoy and Medicine Hat High School.

The Rams kick off their 5A schedule today against Calgary’s Notre Dame at noon at U of L’s Community Sports Stadium.

The Rams will have to play a certain amount of games to get ranked by the 5A committee.

“Really, we want to know how we stack up against other 5A schools,” said Majeran.

“We want to know what it’s going to take to win a 5A championship.”
