The Catholic Central Cougars football team have began a new season with a new coach and a young roster that will hopefully continue to build a winning culture in the program.

Joey Cavilla wanted to come into his first season as a head coach learning what the program is doing in terms of the players that are here and what the coaches have built already.

“Coach Jordan (Dyck) was the head coach before that and he’s moved into the defensive coordinator role and I’m just trying to add to what he was already doing, which is trying to build a winning culture,” said Cavilla.

“With the work that he did, it’s easier for me to come in and kind of follow those expectations and help (to) try and set the bar as well.”

Cavilla thinks the players need to be patient and seek what works best for them with many Grade 10s starting.

“We might not be able to move the ball in a traditional way,” said Cavilla.

“And in our first two to three weeks here together, we’ve been trying and kind of tinkering with different things. So I do think we’re going to have to think a little bit outside the box, but at the same time, we’re throwing a lot at these kids because we’re trying something new every week and they’re doing an awesome job picking it up.”

CCH has only three seniors that are on the starting roster and will be expected to lead the way.

“Especially with how many young heads are in the huddle,” said Cavilla.

“So our seniors (have) got to kind of be our composure in the face of adversity as well as setting an example of what they’re used to at CCH, which is tough football and kind of setting that bar.”

Grade 12 player Tytus Prawdzik is one of the very few seniors on this year’s team and has enjoyed the younger players on the team.

“The young players are obviously trying to prove themselves in the games and in the practices, they’ve got a lot of hustle,” said  Prawdzik.

“They don’t lack the skill, maybe the confidence, but we’re looking forward to seeing these boys just now progress.”

The Cougars are 1-1 so far on the season heading into tonight’s game against Winston Churchill.

after a loss to W.R. Myers and a win against Strathmore.

Kick off tonight between CCH and Winston Churchill is 7:30 p.m. at U of L stadium.
