The Winston Churchill Bulldogs football team are in the midst of youth movement in their roster this season but are excited to put the hard work put in to the test this season.
“The guys are excited to get the season underway,” said Jonathan Dick, Bulldogs head coach.
“We’ve been working hard for three weeks now … and guys have been putting the work in. So it’ll be nice to see how it comes together in a game.”
The Bulldogs have had good numbers out this year, which included a majority of Grade 10s, who either played bantam or are new to the sport.
“We’re a little bit green but we’re learning and it’s fun to watch the guys pick up the concepts and the schemes that we’re putting in and learn from those things,” said Dick.
The young Bulldogs will find success through sticking with it in games and not showing frustration.
“You’re always going to have some things happen (and) it’s really dependent on how you rebound from those things and move forward and learn from every game (and) learn from every practice,” said Dick.
Dick agreed that the Grade 12s will be leading the charge.
“The Grade 12s that we have are great leaders,” said Dick.
“So key for them to lead these young guys, show them kind of how we do things with Bulldog football and obviously lead on the field during games.”
Grade 12 Zach Light said the energy’s high.
“I can see that we’re progressing pretty quickly,” said Light.
“So it’s just fun to see where we’ll go this season and then after we’re gone, just watching them (younger players) progress even more will be good to see as well.”
Winston Churchill opens up the season against Catholic Central High School tonight at 7:30 p.m. at University of Lethbridge stadium.
“We’re all super stoked,” said Light.
“We’ve all been waiting for this first game for a long time and we’re all super ready.”
