The Lethbridge Hurricanes earned three of a possible four points over the weekend after a 5-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

Logan Wormald led the way with two goals, while Cameron Norrie, Kooper Gizowski and Logan McCutcheon each tallied a goal apiece in the win.

“I don’t think we played our best hockey tonight (on Saturday) and  that’s the honest truth, and we took way too many penalties against this team,” said Wormald.

“But we came out on top and that’s all that really matters.”

Discipline was an issue for the Canes as they took seven minor penalties in the game and a couple of coincidental penalties were assessed to both teams.

Brandon had seven penalties in the game too.

Brandon was able to capitalize twice on the powerplay in the second period.

But Lethbridge seemed to have settled it down by the third period as they had no infractions.

“I’m pretty sure we were all pretty upset at each other,” said Wormald.

“I feel like that definitely wasn’t our game at all and that’s shouldn’t be happening.  So, we had a talk about it in the intermissions and we seemed to figure it out by the third period.”

Head coach Bill Peters thought saw the discipline improve later in the game.

“It wasn’t there through 40 but it was there through the last 20,” said Peters.

“So we go into the period up 4-3 and a lot of times in this league you’ve got to win a period in the third period to get a point or two and we weren’t in that situation. We didn’t need to win the period, we were already up one, and (the) period started,  they had a three on the board (and) it  ended with a three. So I thought we were much better in the third  with just our overall play, puck management and discipline.”

Wormald gave his assessment of the weekend after a split.

“I think we’ve dominated five-on-five hockey,” said Wormald.

“We’re definitely taking too many penalties out there and when we’re on the PK (penalty kill) we obviously kill a lot off, but it’s not the right play for us.”

After the weekend games, Peters said the process will get cleaned up.

“We need to be better at managing the puck, we need to be cleaner at coming out of our own zone and the biggest thing we’ve got to do is find a way to be disciplined as a group,” said Peters.

The win improved the Canes record to 5-1-1 and taking out an 11 out of a possible 14 points to start the season.

Lethbridge hosts the Prince George Cougars on Friday night.
