Defenceman Will Sharpe had a four-point (two goals, two assists) night to help the Lethbridge Hurricanes rout the Prince George Cougars 7-3 on Friday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
“I think we worked hard in all areas of the ice tonight,” said Sharpe.
“We possessed the puck pretty well tonight, especially in the O-zone (offensive zone). I thought we were all over them for a few parts of that game there. I mean like the shots kind of tell you as well as the score.”
Head coach Bill Peters liked the team’s game right from the start.
“We got contributions throughout the line-up”,” said Peters.
“Special teams were good again and that’s a big thing in this league right now. So that’s important for us.”
Sharpe opened the scoring in the game just 4:45 into the first period with his first of the season from Miguel Marques and Noah Chadwick.
Kooper Gizowski made it 2-0 for the Canes when his shot from the slot found its way through a crowd for his fourth of the season from Sharpe and Logan McCutcheon with 5:11 to go in the opening frame.
Jett Lajoie cut the Canes lead to 2-1 one with his seventh of the season from Hunter Laing at the 7:08 mark of the second period.
Captain Noah Chadwick restored Lethbridge’s two-goal lead 1:39 later with his first of the season from Miguel Marques and Kash Andresen.
The Cougars clawed back to within a goal once again when Ephram McNutt scored to make the score 3-2 at 9:20 of the second period.
Koehn Zimmer and Arseni Anisimov assisted on McNutt’s goal.
Shane Smith scored first as a Cane and of the season to give Lethbridge a 4-2 lead with 23 seconds left in the second period.
Marques and McCutcheon assisted on Smith’s Marker.
Sharpe one-timed in his second of the night on the powerplay from Marques and Logan Wormald 4:44 into the third to make the score 5-2 for the Canes.
Smith added his second of the night over a minute later from Sharpe and Chadwick to make it 6-2 Canes.
Wormald one-timed the puck in at 7:17 mark of the third to give Lethbridge a 7-2 lead.
Chadwick and Marques assisted on the goal.
Ziemmer scored the Cougars third goal with 6:29 to go in the game.
The Canes outshot Prince George 39-23.
Lethbridge went 2-for-7 on the powerplay and the Cougars went 1-for-7
The Canes improve to 6-1-1 on the season with the win.
