Kodiaks soccer have exciting weekend ahead

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks wrap up their regular seasons this weekend with plenty to play for still.

The men clinched a playoff spot last weekend and have an eye on first place with a win this weekend.

“Our league is so tough this year on the guys side,” said Sean Carey, Kodiaks head coach for both teams.

“The boys have worked hard all year … and now it’s in our hands. If we can get the game on Sunday, then we have the first seed and we get a  buy at championships.”

Carey wants to see consistency to end the regular season to tune-up for  championships.

“(Being) a lot more clinical in front of the net would be something definitely that I’d like to see from the boys and then take some relief off the defence, even though we feel that  we can be a lot better for defending,” said Carey.

“We lead in the south I believe in goal against right now. So that’s (a) testament to the boys defensive commitment and worth ethic.”

Carey feels the boys  had to be prepared for every  game thrown at them because anyone could beat anyone in the league.

“The boys have done that and for them to be one of the three  for sure to go through is a fantastic achievement for them,” said Carey.

The boys end the season at Medicine Hat College on Sunday and have a record of 5-2-2.

If the men lose, they could finish as low as third and perhaps get a tougher quarterfinal matchup.

The women’s team  have to win either one of their matches this weekend  or  combined with a Medicine Hat  College loss at SAIT to clinch a championship berth.

“Our girls  need to take care of business against Augustana on Saturday,” said Carey.

Carey doesn’t want to see the girls play be affected by last weekend’s disappointing loss to Olds.

“We’ve  been playing very well this year,” said Carey.

“We’ve seemed to have grown and we’ve just got to get back into playing with possession.”

The Kodiak women’s team host University of Augustana today at 1 p.m. and wrap up the regular season at Medicine Hat College on Sunday.

They currently sit in third with a 6-4 record.

The ACAC soccer championship  are at Northwestern Polytechnic in Grande Prairie next weekend.
