The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s basketball kick off a new season tonight with a very young line-up that will be weaved into the grind of the ACAC season.
The team has two starters back and four girls who didn’t see much court time last season meshed in with six rookies.
“We’re young,” said Ken McMurray, Kodiaks head coach.
“I’m seeing lots of rookie errors early, but lots of potential there, and I think they have the potential to be pretty good down the stretch. So our goal is to see how far we can bring them and hopefully by (the) 1st of February, we’re going to be where we need to be.”
The new girls will have to be tougher mentally at the ACAC level.
“It’s just mentally they (have) got to be a lot tougher because they’re going to face teams that will make runs on you,” said McMurray.
McMurray knows he will have to patient with the bumps this season.
“After every game, whether it’s a win or a loss, we have to try to look at the positive things that happened in each game and how we can build on those and then learn from the mistakes ,” said McMurray.
“We have to have a short memory of (a) possible loss here and there and then just try to be resilient and move on and learn from our mistakes and have a growth mindset.”
McMurray will look to Annah Westrop, Courtney Deemter and Chase Wells-Creighton to lead by example.
“For the most part, how you play sets the example of how hard you work and that kind of thing and so that’s (the kind of leadership that we’re looking for,” said McMurray.
“It’s a long season,” said Westrop.
“We’re destined to have some ups and downs and some bumps along the road . But I think it’ll be a bit of a learning curve (that) hopefully will just build and build and build.”
Westrop thinks there should be good chemistry with the younger players.
“It’s just about them kind of getting used to playing at this level because we’re all doing well playing with each other,” said Westrop.
The Kodiaks play a home and home with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers beginning tonight at Lethbridge Polytechnic with game time at 6 p.m.
