The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s basketball team gained a split with the Medicine Hat Rattler over the weekend with an 84-80 road win on Saturday.
Reserve Corey Banks led the way for the Kodiaks with 22 points.
“The guys came out more aggressive on offence,” said Ryan Heggie, Kodiaks head coach.
“We had Corey Banks that came off the bench (and) he scored 12 points in the first quarter. He just came out aggressive and we played faster than we did Friday.”
Heggie said guys were very excited after winning.
“I think it gave them some belief that we can play with some of the top teams,” said Heggie.
The Kodiak’s women’s team lost 59-50 to the Rattlers on Saturday night to gain a split as well.
Volleyball
The Kodiak’s men’s volleyball team swept their weekend match upa with the Rattlers after winning in four sets on Saturday night, while the women’s team gained a split after being swept in three sets on Saturday.
Cross country
Both of the Polytechnic’s cross-country team’s punched their tickets to nationals over the weekend at championships in Calgary
The Kodiak women’s team competed in their six-kilometer run at noon. The team had an excellent showing led by first-year runner Hannah Pilling (first year, Academic Upgrading, Cardston) who finished second with a time of 24:47, followed by Kate Block (second year, Business Administration, Waldheim, Sask.) and Annah Westrop (fourth year, General Arts and Science, Lethbridge)
The women’s team finished second overall, qualifying them for nationals with their top six runners competing: Hannah Pilling, Annah Westrop, Kate Block, Hallee Pilling (second year, Exercise Science, Cardston), Hannah Smith (third year, Exercise Science, Raymond), and Rayanne Hoeflicher (fourth year, Bachelors of Nursing, Middle Lake, Sask.).
The men’s 8k race followed at 1 p.m., where the Kodiaks battled it out with NAIT Ooks runners for the second-place team title. Owen Stewart (third year, Business Administration – Accounting, Lethbridge) was the first Kodiaks runner to cross the line in 8th place, followed by Ethan Grasmeyer (second year, Natural Resource Compliance, Smithers, B.C.).
The men’s team finished second overall, qualifying them for nationals as their top six runners will compete: Owen Stewart, Ethan Grasmeyer, Conner Van den Hoek (second year, Business Administration – Management, Fort Macleod), Wacey Smith (first year, Digital Communications and Media, Bentley), Keegan Hartery (second year, Criminal Justice – Policing, Saint John, NB), and Kaysan Mohamed (third year, General Arts and Science, Picture Butte).
U of L Pronghorns
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team were blanked 3-0 by the UBC Thunderbirds in their Friday Canada West championship quarterfinal match-up.
