The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team have had a solid start to their season as the first semester of play comes to an end this weekend.

“I’m happy with where we’re at,” said Dave Waknuk, Horns head coach.

“I think it’s a team that is improving as we go and I think we saw the growth from the preseason to the regular season.”

Waknuk has seen the team’s confidence and chemistry grow and improvements in their decision making.

“I think we’ve also established ourselves as a pretty strong defensive team, which I think has maybe even surprised me a little bit,” said Waknuk.

“We guard very well and I think that’s been great to see and just the team chemistry in the way we defend.”

Scoring consistency is what Waknuk wants to see improvements in.

“There’s still moments where we have trouble putting the ball in the basket,” said Waknuk.

The girls have to find patience with their decision making.

“Sometimes we play maybe too fast for my liking and it leads to turnovers or leads to rushed shots,” said Waknuk.

“So just trying to find a pace of play that suits us is probably the most pressing one.”

The team has a 3-3 record heading into the final weekend of the semester.

“It’s kind of how we’re finishing games is where it comes to I think,” said Waknuk, on where they’re at right now.

“So it really comes down to that play late.”

The Horns wrap up first-half action at University of Manitoba this weekend.

“Obviously you’re playing to win and hopefully you’re successful,” said Waknuk.

“But for us, a successful weekend would be us continuing to improve.”
