A night after both teams made a blockbuster trade, it was the Lethbridge Hurricanes who got the best of the Moose Jaw Warriors with a 5-3 win on Tuesday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
The win snapped a six game losing streak for the Canes.
“I mean it’s a big relief,” said Hayden Pakkala, who scored a goal in the game.
“I think you can already feel it in the room and yeah we’re excited to just keep winning games and keep playing hard.”
The Canes were down three times in the game and battled back to win the in the later stages.
“I think we stayed composed throughout the whole game,” said Pakkala.
“We got down … a goal at a time and then found a way to bounce back.”
The Warriors opened the scoring when Rilen Kovacevic went down on a shorthanded breakaway and scored 3:45 into the game.
Pakkala tied the game 2:38 into the second period with his fifth of the year from Carsen Adair and Kooper Gizowski.
Moose Jaw made the score 2-1 when Pavel McKenzie roofed it over the shoulder of his former teammate Jackson Unger just under a minute later from Max Finley.
Noah Chadwick’s seeing eye shot made it through a crowd to tie the game at two on the powerplay at the 10:35 mark of the second from Miguel Marques and Brayden Edwards.
Lynden Lakovic gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead on the powerplay with his 13th goal of the year from Nolan Paquette and Keaton Dowhaniuk at the 10:43 mark of the third.
Logan Wormald one-timed in his 14th of the season from Edwards and Will Sharpe at the 14:24 of the third period to tie the game at three.
Wormald gave the Canes their first lead of the night when he scored his second of the night past now former teammate Brady Smith at the 18:58 mark of the third period.
Brayden Yager scored his first as a Hurricane into an empty net with a second to go in the game to make the final score 5-3 for Lethbridge.
The Hurricanes outshot the Warriors 39-21.
Lethbridge went 1-for7 while Moose Jaw went 1-for-4 on the powerplay.
Yager also had six shots and a minor penalty in his debut.
Unger saved 18-of-21 shots for his first win as a Hurricane.
Smith stopped 34-of-38 shots and Landen Ward had a shot in their Warriors debuts.
The Canes next game is on Teddy Bear Toss Night when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night at 7 p.m.
