Defenceman Wojtech Port was recently acquired by the Lethbridge Hurricanes from the Moose Jaw Warriors and is looking forward to bringing his championship pedigree to the club.

“I’m glad to be here,” said Port, after practice last week.

Port was acquired in mid-November  from the Warriors for Ryder Ellis and two draft picks before playing one home game and then playing five straight on the road with the team to start out his tenure with the Canes.

“I feel like a two-way defenceman,” said Port.

“I like to play on both sides (of) the ice.”

Port brings that championship pedigree having won the WHL championship with the Warriors last season.

“I mean last year was unbelievable,” said Port.

“I mean it was a great experience, it was a long season, so I think I can take something from that and put it up (in) the season with Lethbridge here.”

Port wants to improve on both the offensive and defensive side of the game.

Forward Trae Johnson sees Port as a good player that is skilled and plays hard.

“He knows what it takes on a deep run … and what it takes to win,” said Johnson.

“I think just having that guy in the room that won the league last year, (it) definitely helps.”

Canes head coach Bill Peters thinks Port has good pedigree with being an NHL draft pick, playing at the upcoming world junior championships, winning a WHL title and playing in a Memorial Cup.

“So obviously that’s invaluable experience,” said Peters.

Peters considers him a puck-moving defenceman.

Port has one assist in six games with the Canes.

Port is expected to represent Czechia at the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa.

The Anaheim Ducks sixth rounder in 2023 was to play in the 2024 tournament before an injury forced him to miss the whole championship in Sweden.

The rearguard has 36 points in 115 games with four WHL teams.
