The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s volleyball team are finding positives out of a struggling season of starting out with a 2-7 record in the first semester.
“I have a little bit of mixed emotions,” said Anna Schwark, Kodiak women’s head coach.
“It’s tough to acknowledge that we have quite a losing record in the first semester but despite that, I think we’ve been doing our best. I think as this semester progressed, we really learned how tough it is in this league to compete.”
Schwark felt there were still personal team wins playing through the grind of the North Division teams.
“Even though we lost, we could still compete with the best in the country at times and definitely improved from the starting matches against Med Hat to when we finished against Concordia,” said Schwark.
“We (were) totally a different team and we definitely learned a lot.”
The Kodiaks are a young team and are taking advantage of that factor.
“Our young girls are getting tons of (playing) time against these really great athletes,” said Schwark.
“So we’re kind of just working on playing the long game right now. The wins immediately would be nice but we’re just really trying to acknowledge that every failure just improves how we handle failures in next semester or next year.”
The Kodiaks middles have made improvements over the course of the first half in helping a faster offence approach.
“I think the middles, probably of all the positions, have made the most improvements,” said Schwark.
“They’re doing a really, really great job. All four of them that we have in the mix there, they work really hard in practice and in games.”
Another skill improvement in the Kodiaks’ is their ability to stay confident and how they don’t other factors impact them to stay in that mindset.
“I think that even has made tons of improvements,” said Schwark.
“It was something we struggled with last semester and the girls … really realized that just not being confident doesn’t serve us at all. It doesn’t nothing for feeling good or winning games. So I think we put in a lot of work just on the mental side of the game.”
Schwark thinks the girls are seeing the bigger picture.
“They see that it’s not about them as individuals, it’s just about the team,” said Schwark.
“So we just really rely on each other and I think just that change in mentality of not being so stressed because it’s not on one person shoulders. We win together and we lose together and I think they just do a really, really great job of keeping things in perspective.”
