The Lethbridge Hurricanes started a three-game weekend mini-series with the Edmonton Oil Kings by losing 7-3 at VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Friday night.

“We were playing from behind all night and it’s not a recipe for success,” said Bill Peters, Hurricanes head coach.

“It’s something that we don’t usually do but tonight we did and paid the price for it.”

“ Just got to make sure we compete for a full 60 every night,” said Trae Johnson.

“The good thing is we play them two more times here this weekend, so hopefully redeem ourselves and go get two in their barn.”

The Oil Kings got out to an early 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes of the game.

Roan Woodward one-timed his 13th goal of the season into a yawning cage from Gracyn Sawchyn 4:43 into the opening frame, while Lethbridge product Rylen Roersma tipped in his seventh of the year from Parker Alcos and Cole Miller over two minutes later.

The puck bounced off of Landon Hanson and passed Jackson Unger to give the Oil Kings a 3-0 lead 10:20 into the first period.

Miller assisted on Hanson’s goal and that marker ended Unger’s night.

Johnson tapped in his third of the season on the powerplay to get the Canes on the board at the 14:04 mark of the first period.

Kash Andresen and Will Sharpe collected the assists.

Cage Smith tipped the puck by Koen Cleaver to give Edmonton a 4-1 lead just 3:49 into the second period.

Josh Mori and Josh Lee assisted on Smith’s goal.

Andresen was sprung on a breakaway by Johnson and he capitalized to cut the Oil Kings lead in half 16:35 into the second period.

Johnson scored his second of the night on the powerplay to bring the Canes to within a goal with eight seconds to go in the second period. Sharpe and Tristen Doyle got the assists.

Hanson gave Edmonton a 5-3 lead with his second goal of the night on the penalty kill at the  5:54 mark of  the third period.

Alcos beat Cleaver low glove side to give the Oil Kings a 6-3 lead 10:26 into the third from Gavin Hodnett.

Woodward made it 7-3 Oil Kings with second of the night 11:59 into third from Alcos and Hanson.

Lethbridge went 2-for-4 while the Oil Kings went 0-for 2 on the powerplay.

Final shots were 35-19 for the Oil Kings.

Both teams face off in Edmonton tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

“It’s a quick turn around,” said Peters.

“There’s a lot of things that can … get cleaned up just with communication and a little bit better execution.”
