Defenceman Logan McCutcheon had two goals and an assist to lead the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 6-2 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
“We had a bit of slow start,” said McCutcheon.
“But I think that (once) we got into it, we got our feet moving more, we got in on our forecheck and were able to hem them in deep a couple of times.”
It was two defencemen that got the Hurricanes offence going in the first period.
Tristen Doyle’s point shot found its way through a crowd into the net on the powerplay at the 10:22 mark opening frame from Cameron Norrie and Kooper Gizowski.
It was then Vojtech Port’s turn, as he scored his first of the season and against his old team at the 15:26 mark of the first.
The Warriors got on the board when Ethan Semeniuk tipped in his ninth of the season on the powerplay from Landen McFadden and Nolan Paquette 2:38 into the second period.
The Hurricanes restored their two-goal lead at the 10:28 mark of the second, when Logan Wormald took a pass at the left face-off dot and deposited the puck into an empty net from Noah Chadwick and Brayden Yager on the powerplay.
Moose Jaw responded 19 seconds later when Ethan Hughes jammed in his third of the season from McFadden and Riley Thorpe.
Cameron Norrie doubled the Canes lead to 4-2 with his third of the season from Logan McCutcheon and Brayden Edwards at 12:17 of the second.
McCutcheon’s shot from the blueline found its way through a screen from Port and Gavin Lesiuk at 16:44 of the second period to give the Canes a 5-2 lead after two periods.
McCutcheon one-timed in his second of the game from Wormald and Edwards at the 4:32 mark of the third period to give the Canes a commanding 6-2 lead.
The Hurricanes had seven points by defencemen on the night.
McCutcheon thought that showed how good the defence are playing when they’re contributing defensively and offensively.
“So it’s huge for us,” he said.
Lethbridge went 2-for-2 while Moose Jaw went 1-or-3 on the powerplay.
Lethbridge begins a five-game road trip at Swift Current on Friday night.
