Attack Volleyball is hosting their inaugural February Volleyball Festival for young local athletes to learn how to play with others through fun games next month.

“We find that a lot of the kids that are in school right now, they always have PD (professional development) days happening pretty much every month, and one thing that we noticed is a lot of the times the kids don’t have a lot to do during those days,” said André De Lacerda, Attack volleyball coach.

“So we kind of found a way to make a little bit of an event where they can actually get out of the house, do some physical activity, but most (importantly) just have fun with their friends and play volleyball.”

The two-day event will consist of a Bjerring doubles tournament where a participant either plays with or against other players in a short-game format.

The second event is the Sorting Hat Smackdown where players are randomly chosen in Attack’s sorting hat to play with different teammates on different teams in each of the rounds in the short 6 on 6 games.

“We don’t want to make things boring for the kids,” said De Lacerda.

“They’re coming in for a one-day session or they (are) going to playing doubles, and we don’t want to make them play for the entire time that they are with the same partner. I think the whole goal for us is teaching the kids how to one connect with other kids … but at the same time know how to play these people’s strengths.”

The  individual players with the most wins will win that tournament and be up for prizes.

Attack Volleyball has learned that most winners of the games are the ones that adapt the best.

“They learn really quick how to play with different teammates, they make the environment positive, they connect with their teammates,” said De Lacerda.

The February festival is on Feb. 18 and 19 for U12-14 and U15-U17 players at the Lethbridge Volleyball Club building and  registration can be found  at http://www.attackvolleyball.ca.

Prizes will be handed out to winners of the tournaments and for an overall winner of the festival.

There are only 32 spots for each group.
