While the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s volleyball sit comfortably in second place in the South Division standings with a 9-2 record, there is a sense of urgency needed as the second semester goes along.

“One of the big words that we’ve used in the last couple of weeks is urgency,” said Greg Gibos, Kodiaks head coach.

“Urgency’s something that we’ve really focused on and really there’s no more time. It’s getting to that point in the season where digs (have to) be made, balls have to be attacked and serves have to be in a good spot.”

Gibos sees the team needing to improve on first contact.

“I don’t think we’ve found truly what our serving potential is and how good we can be behind the line,” said Gibos.

The energy and drive is a focus for the Kodiaks at this point in the season.

“We know the goals that we have and it’s just having that conviction and that intention to chase those goals and not be afraid of the big moment,” said Gibos.

Since the ACAC volleyball has gone down to 19 matches, the games are going to matter more as the season gets closer to the ACAC championship with divisional seedings.

“We only play each other in the south twice,” said Gibos.

“So the opportunity to sweep a weekend is so critical now for teams because you can move like two-and-a-half games up on an opponent.”

The Kodiaks play SAIT in a home and home this weekend beginning in Lethbridge tonight.
