Horn women’s basketball sweep Vikes

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball got their record back up to .500 at 8-8 after sweeping a strong  University of Victoria Vikes team over the weekend on home court.

U of L followed a good defensive effort on Friday in a 64-58 win with a 66-60 win on Saturday.

“It’s a big one,” said Dave Waknuk, Horn women’s head coach.

“They were a little wounded but we had to take the opportunity. You gotta play what’s in front of you and these two wins are big ones for us looking ahead and looking into the playoffs.”

Waknuk said defence made the difference.

“We were down 17 on Saturday and able to dig out of it through defence,” said Waknuk.

“We forced a lot of turnovers on Saturday, which fed to our offence.”

Tobore Okome drained 16 points to lead the way for the Horns on Saturday.

U of L made 30.8 per cent of their field goals, over 20  per cent of their three-point attempts. and over 66 per cent of their free throws on Saturday.

The Horns were out rebounded 52-49 on Saturday.

Friday’s stats had U of L making 27.5 per cent of their field goals, over 25 per cent of three point attempts and shooting 52 per cent from the free-throw line.

The Horn men were swept by the Vikes after losing 83-67 on Saturday and 83-75 on Friday.

Both teams head to University of Calgary to play the Dinos this weekend.
