LCI is sending two of its curling teams to the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA) Provincial Championships later this month after winning gold medals at the South Zone tournament that was held at the Lethbridge Curling Club on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
The LCI varsity girls team earned a provincial championships berth after going a perfect 4-0 in the zone tournament, which included an 11-1, five-end win over W.R. Myers in the final.
“I think it was, really, communication and working together as a team ,” said Kylie Marshall, who plays first on the girls team.
Being positive was the mindset heading into the final.
“You have to have a positive mindset and visualize the win,” said Marshall.
Skip Faith Brehaut’s saw the team’s mindset of staying positive getting stronger as zones went on.
“We definitely do better when we have energy, and we’re singing and we’re dancing around and we’re just there to have a good time,” said Brehaut.
“We’re not as focused on winning and just taking it one game at a time.”
“The biggest thing with any of the teams, but I definitely saw it with this girls team, is the idea that when you get down, you are not completely out of the game,” said LCI coach Dave Fletcher.
“The resilience they showed led to their success.”
LCI and W.R. Myers mixed teams as well as Medicine Hat High School’s boys varsity team all earned provincials berths as well.
The ASAA Curling Provincial Championships are Feb. 27-March 1 in Brooks.
