The Lethbridge Hurricanes put on a clinic in a dominant 6-1 win over the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
“The way we started for maybe the first four or five shifts was extremely positive and that’s exactly what you want to see,” said Matt Anholt, Canes assistant coach, to Dustin Forbes of 106. Rock.
“Our leaders are really good. They need to step up and lead the team the right way before the game even starts and they did that tonight.”
Canes defenceman Carsen Adair scored his first career WHL goal 1:57 into the game to give the Canes an early 1-0 lead.
“He’s been definitely gripping the stick a little tighter lately,” said Anholt.
“I think he’s been trying to get a lot of pucks on net, hoping that maybe one hops in, and it was nice to see a really nice goal. Obviously, Yags (Brayden Yager) makes a great play to him and it’s a great screen by I think Smitty (Shane Smith). Their goalie didn’t see it at all.”
Brayden Yager and Leo Braillard assisted on Adair’s goal.
Yager then walked in and snapped it passed Max Hildebrand to give the Canes a 2-0 lead at the 13:38 mark of the first period.
Tristen Doyle and Shane Smith assisted on Yager’s 19th goal of the year.
Kooper Gizowski unassisted marker 3:08 into the second gave Lethbridge a 3-0 lead.
Lukas Dragicevic got Prince Albert on the board with under three minutes to go in the second period from Aiden Oiring and Vojtech Vochvest to make the score 3-1.
Noah Chadwick’s wrist shot from the blueline found its way into the net on the powerplay from Brayden Edwards and Yager 2:06 into the third period.
Braillard finished off a nice passing play with Chadwick and Yager to give the Canes a 5-1 lead 9:44 into the third period.
Shane Smith one timed in a pass from Yager on a 2-on-1 to give the Canes a 6-1 lead 13:27 into the third period.
Lethbridge outshot Prince Albert 37-18 on the game and went 2-for-4 on the powerplay.
Canes forward Logan Wormald left the game and did not return after a taking a big hit in the second period.
The Canes travel to take on the Red Deer Rebels tonight.
