The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks dominated the court in picking up wins over Ambrose University this past weekend.
The Kodiak men’s volleyball team improved to 15-2 after a couple of three-set sweeps over the Lions on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Nolan Moes and Ethan Nashim each had 12 points in Friday’s win.
Nashim has 11 kills on 16 attempts and one error, while Moes had 10 kill on 21 attempts and had two errors.
Nashim had 14 kills on 22 attempts and four errors on Saturday to lead the way.
“I felt pretty confident this weekend,” said Nashim.
“(On) Saturday night, we rested Nolan, so I felt in trouble situations I’d be the guy that would have to step up and that and I was confident in that position. So I’m happy it led to two team wins.”
Nashim thought first contact was key to their success.
“We really took control of the serving,” said Nashim.
“”(On) Saturday we passed pretty decent and that translated to a lotta efficiency through our offence.”
Kodiak’s men volleyball head coach Greg Gibos liked how some younger players got playing time.
“Saturday was even extra special to see some of the young guys get their first taste of a start,” said Gibos.
“It’s great to see some of those young guys get some increased roles and I thought they really did a great job managing that match-up in Calgary on Saturday.”
In what has been a tough season for the 3-14 Kodiak women’s volleyball team, they were able to find a bright spot over the weekend after they knocked off the South Division-leading Ambrose with a three -set sweep on home court on Friday.
Aideena Wickstrom led the way for the Kodiaks with a 14 kills on 31 attempts and 17 points in the win.
The Kodiak women then lost in four-sets to Ambrose on Saturday.
Wickstrom had 13 points, 9 kills, six errors on 26 attempts while Lauren Barker had seven kills on nine attempts and an hours
The Kodiaks basketball teams swept through the Lions as well.
LP’s men’s basketball team scored over 200 points in their two wins.
In the 109-80 win on Friday, Ryan Degner led the way for the Kodiaks with 27 points, going 9-of-15 in field goals made and five-for-five from the free throw line.
In Saturday’s 103-78 win, Cody Tollestrup and Coleson Lake each had 22 points while Levi Balderson had 18 points to pace the Kodiaks in the win.
The Kodiak women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 71-45 win on Friday followed by a 78-72 overtime win on Saturday.
Chase-Wells Creighton had 15 points Friday and on Saturday had 26 points for the Kodiaks.
All the Kodiak teams wrap up their regular seasons against Briercrest this weekend with basketball teams on the road and the volleyball teams at home.
Pronghorns
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team split their road games at U of C over the weekend.
The Horn men began with a 98-86 loss on Friday.
Angelo Mbituyimana drained 23 points for the Horns in the loss.
The Horn men then rebounded with a nail-biting 69-66 win on Saturday.
Jack-Henry Fox-Grey had 19 points, followed by Mbituyimana’s 11 points in the win.
The Horn women’s team were swept by the Dinos by scores of 80-72 and 74-39 respectively.
Courtney McKee collected 22 points on Friday, while Tobore Okome had nine points in Saturday’s loss to lead the Horns.
Both U of L teams host the University of Winnipeg this weekend to wrap up their regular seasons.
