A season after going 4-16 and missing the post season, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball turned their fortunes around by going 11-9 this season and landing playoff spot as the fourth seed in the Prairie Conference.

The Horns open up their Canada West playoffs at the University of Victoria tomorrow when they take on the University of Fraser Valley Cascades in a play-in game.

“Just one game at a time and understanding that it’s a do or die situation,” said Kenny Otieno, Horns head coach, on preparation.

“We don’t have opportunities to learn our lessons from bad starts or (from) situations where we get down. So, yeah, every possession counts.”

Confidence is what the Horns will rely on.

“We think we can compete with anyone if we just come out and have the mindset of dictating the game from the first five minutes and not having to be in a situation where we’re playing catch up,” said Otieno.

Trust will be key for the Horns.

“We gotta really put trust in each other and the work that we put in, to make sure that we’re competing every minute in every game,” said Otieno.

Otieno spoke about the challenge UFV will provide the Horns.

“I think their front court is definitely dangerous and we gotta be aware of being physical early, and making them uncomfortable and then not letting their back court dictate in terms of getting inside the paint,” said Otieno.

Otieno says being in the moment will be important.

“Like not looking too far ahead in terms of what’s gonna happen,” said Otieno.

“As long as we take care of what we can control, then we’re giving ourselves a chance.”

Gametime is 6 p.m. MST on Friday and results can be found at www. canadawest.org/sports/mbkb/2024-25p/schedule.

The winner of that game will move on to play the 20-0 University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday in a quarterfinal, while the loser’s season is done.
