The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s soccer team have found their new head coach, as they appointed Cedric Bovon to the helm.

Bovon serves in the Calgary Blizzards Soccer Club as the Girls Technical Director and League 1 head coach and did spend time with both the University of Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal University Cougars women’s programs as an assistant coach.

“Obviously very excited,” said Bovon to local media on Monday.

“At the same time, (I’m) trying to catch up on the learning process that I’m in, in terms of all the pieces that come with becoming a head coach in the USports environment.”

Bovon said USports opportunities are few and far between.

“Lethbridge really was aligned with my values in terms of what I was looking for in a department and a school and that was what was really exciting for me,” said Bovon.

Bovon is taking over a team that has a combined six wins since the 2021 season and he spoke about how he plans to bring stability to the team that has struggled.

“I think (the) important first aspect is really focus on the culture within the team and within the squad to make sure that everyone’s aligned with my goals as a coach,” said Bovon.

Bovon is a positive coach that focuses on reinforcing that players feel like they’re developing and see growth in their game.

“Can we make progress every day and ensuring that players are supported throughout the process,” said Bovon.

“Throughout the entire interview process, it was clear that he was somebody that would fit what we’ve got going on here,” said Spencer Pommells, U of L athletic director.

“We’re a smaller Canada West and USports institution and we believe that our strength is that we can work together to drive our programs forward, and so that was something that we talked a lot about with Cedric. And it became clear as we worked our way through it that he values those same things.”

Pommells said it was a huge piece, when asked about the hire being able provide stability for the team.

“Throughout the interview process, I was pretty honest and pretty blunt with where we’re at with the program and that we need to start moving it forward,” said Pommells.

“So he knows what he’s getting himself into here with us and with the program. So we’re just gonna starting it day-by-day and just start making some progress with the program and having stability as the head coach is obviously a big part of that.”

Pommells confirmed the hire had the most applications they had received for the position.
