The host University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s curling team will look to rebound after an 8-2 loss to the University of Regina Cougars on Monday during the opening day of the U SPORTS/CCAA Curling Canada Curling Championships at the Lethbridge Curling Club.
“The ice is quite different today (Monday),” said Cameron Kuzma, U of L women’s skip.
“So it’s curling a lot more, it’s a lot quicker than we’re used to. But today we really are just gonna takeaway figuring out our weight control, you know, slowing our foot down and really just trying to have nice clean releases.”
Kuzma thought the team did well communicating.
“We’re gonna just go in (Tuesday) with a fresh kind of mindset and try our best to just be a little bit cleaner on those shots,” she said.
The Horn women play at 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. today.
The Horn men’s played against the Memorial Seahawks later in the evening and the game was in progress as of deadline.
The U of L men play at 12:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. today.
The Horn women are excited to be at the championship as hosts.
“We’re just really happy to be here with the best of Canadian curling teams (at the) university and college levels,” said Kuzma.
“I know … just being in my last year of university, I’m really grateful and I am just excited for this opportunity. So we’re gonna go out there (and) give it our best shot.”
Kuzma was asked about the mindset at a championship of this magnitude.
“It’s really take it shot-by-shot, end-by-end (and) try not to get overwhelmed by the big-picture things,” said Kuzma.
Kuzma said it’s really strong, when asked about the competition.
“We have to come here ready to play the best teams,” said Kuzma.
“So it’s really great to be here and to get to play those really solid teams.”
There are 32 total teams between the college and university sides from across Canada at the championships, which run until Friday at the LCC.
