Lethbridge curler Kayleigh Shannon is a second year skip with the SAIT Trojans women’s team and had the chance to lead her team in her hometown curling rink this past week during the U SPORTS/CCAA Curling Canada Curling Championships.
“It’s amazing,” said Shannon, on Thursday.
“Being home in the hometown is really nice because I get to visit with people that don’t usually get to see me curl.”
Shannon enjoyed the atmosphere.
“I love the bleachers on the ice so the crowd can interact with the curlers,” said Shannon.
“I love the way they set up the event and all of the girls curling together and all of the guys curling together. And the social aspect too, they had two banquets which was really fun for the curlers here.”
Shannon thought the championship was good for Lethbridge.
“Having the crowd on the ice is really good for even new curlers just to see how other teams interact on the ice,” said Shannon.
Shannon had sense of excitement knowing these nationals were going to be in her hometown.
“I was determined to make nationals because of that,” said Shannon.
“I wanted to play in front of my family and friends from Lethbridge. So it really gave me motivation to even do well at provincials.”
Shannon has learned at the college level that good shots have to be made.
“You have to be good teammates to each other on and off the ice,” said Shannon.
She has encountered the challenge of playing the same teams in college.
“In college, most schools are two to three year programs, so we get to play new people a lot which makes it difficult to predict what they’re gonna do,” said Shannon.
Shannon Kleibrink, SAIT women’s curling head coach, thinks of Shannon as a player who is great.
“She’s gonna be one of the future’s in the game for sure and she’s learning every time we go out there on the ice,” said Kleibrink.
“I expect her to be back and to be stronger.”
Kleibrink said she’s great out there calling out all the shots for the team.
“They have a lot of confidence in where she puts the broom and yeah she’s just a really great leader,” said Kleibrink.
SAIT lost 7-5 to Concordia in the national bronze medal draw on Friday.
