Oasiz Wiesblatt scored his second goal of the game 1:56 into overtime to lift the Medicine Hat Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Friday night at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Matt Anholt, Canes associate was asked post game by Dustin Forbes of 106.7 Rock if the loss came down to either the team letting off the gas after the fourth goal in the third period or a good team like the Tigers making a good push.
“Probably a little bit of both,” said Anholt.
“I think for a really good chunk of that third period we just really struggled with getting out of our d zone coverages and being able to flip the ice on them and they made us pay.”
A fast pace start helped the Hurricanes into the second period when they got two quick goals.
Canes captain Noah Chadwick broke in towards the net on former Canes goalie Harrison Meneghin and beat him five hole to open the scoring 1:12 into the second period.
Brayden Yager and Logan Wormald assisted on Chadwick’s 13th goal of the year.
Kooper Gizowski then tapped in his 16th of the year from Wormald and Brayden Edwards to give Lethbridge a 2-0 lead 39 seconds later.
The Tigers made it 2-1 when Liam Ruck tapped in the puck in at the side of the net 2:47 into the second period from Oasiz Wiesblatt and Gavin McKenna.
Miguel Marques scored in his second game back from injury on the powerplay from Shane Smith and Trae Johnson 12:38 into the middle frame to give the Canes a 3-1 lead.
Gizowski scored his second of the night 1:12 into the third period to give the Canes a 4-1 lead.
Wormald assisted on the goal.
The Tigers then roared back with four straight unanswered goals between the three minute and the almost 10 minute mark of the third period.
Tanner Molendyk scored 3:03 into the third from the Ruck brothers of Markus and Liam.
It was a 1:42 later that McKenna notched his 34th goal of the year from Josh Van Mulligan and Hunter St. Martin.
McKenna then assisted on Wiesblatt’s 32nd goal of the year at the 7:33 mark to tie the game.
Veeti Väisänen also got an assist.
Kadon McCann pushed the Tigers ahead at the 9:54 mark of the third period.
Marques tied the game13:24 into the third period from Yager and Leo Braillard.
