The Lethbridge Lightning Senior AA men’s hockey team are hosting the Hockey Alberta Senior AA Provincials in a couple of weeks and the team is looking to drum up more community support ahead of the tournament.
“We’re on a big push for sponsorships,” said Scott Davis-Fisch, Lightning general manager.
“We’re on a big push for companies to get on board and to give us a hand financially as well as time with any luck. We’re having different draws and stuff. So with any luck we can get some silent auction items.”
Davis-Fisch said it’s been a bit of battle when asked about what the community support is like.
“We’ve got a lot of pushback where it’s just like well you’re men playing hockey, you should be able to support yourselves,” he said.
The Lightning have lucked out with volunteers for the event.
“We’ve been able to fill our whole volunteer schedule,” said Davis-Fisch.
“I think there might be four or five spots left out of the 50 that we need. So the volunteers have stepped up and definitely helped us that way.”
The Ranchland Hockey League gives players a chance to keep going with hockey.
“It’s guys who have played at a high level of junior and then wanna keep going,” said Davis-Fisch.
“So we’ve got everything from teachers to policemen, firefighters, the whole gamut as far as workers within our community who not only wanna play at a high level but also add to our community through employment here.”
Davis-Fish said this is a way to stay active in our community and represent Lethbridge on a sporting front at a high level.
The host Lightning are going in to the championship having won their second consecutive Ranchland Hockey League championship after defeating the Nanton Palominos in five games earlier this month.
“It’s much better hockey than it has been in the past and we’re looking to revamp that image and show people that it’s really good hockey,” said Davis-Fisch.
The Lightning will be joined by the Palominos and the champions from the North Central, North Peace and Saskalta leagues.
The Senior AA Provincial Championship is April 3-6 at Cavendish Farms Centre.
