Ponech excited to join winning culture at RDP

LCI Rams varsity boys volleyball graduate Jack Ponech is taking his game to the post-secondary level next season as he has committed to a winning program in the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings beginning this fall.
Ponech is going to a program that is coming off winning both an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference title and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship and it was the 14th national title in the program’s history which is the most in CCAA history.
“It just feels really good to join a team that’s about winning,” said Ponech, earlier this week at a recognition event for his commitment.
The discussions between Ponech and the Kings revolved around his future and what that will look like for him in the sport.
“Their coach there was just super nice and said that he was glad to help me if I wanna even go farther than college volleyball,” said Ponech.
Ponech is looking to compete for a starting role on the team next season.
“The only way to get there is by competing for it,” said Ponech.
“I don’t think I’m gonna get it just by accepting that I’m a rookie. I think a rookie is just a term and that if I’m good enough I’m gonna get playing time.”
It has been since the ninth grade that LCI has given Ponech plenty of opportunities.
“They really invested in me and my teammates a lot,” said Ponech.
“I think that’s why I was able to get to the skill level I am (at) now. I wouldn’t be here without my coaches and my other teammates, so I thank them a lot.”
Ponech is enrolling in a justice studies diploma at RDP.
“A great opportunity for him to take his game to the next level and I’m excited to see what he can do there,” said Dustin McCubbing, LCI varsity boys volleyball head coach.
McCubbing thinks Ponech as the type of player that was hardworking.
“He was pretty intense and he held our team accountable both at practices and during games,” said McCubbing.
