The LCI Rams varsity boys rugby team are going into a new season wanting to build further as a group after a successful 2024 campaign.

“For us right now it’s building the program back up to the status we had it with solid numbers (and) always being competitive,” said Randy Hyland, head coach.

“As we continue to move forward, it’s good to see  the players are coming out, especially the young guys. It just shows that Rams rugby is a good sport and the numbers are reflecting it as we move forward throughout the season and we’ll see what happens.”

With a heavier core of Grade 11s and 12s, LCI will look to lean on those players for success.

“I think building on that moving forward, it’s gonna create the popularity of it ,” said Hyland.

“I think that’s where we got a lot more Grade 12s (coming) out this year. And our solid group of Grade 11s that we had last year, they enjoy the game and  they just wanna continue to play it and prove (to) everybody that we’re better than what we were last year.”

The Rams is mixed in a 15s league with Winston Churchill and Chinook.

“I think as long as we go out there and we don’t quit, we give a solid product out in the field and we leave everything out on the field,” said Hyland on success against their opponents.

The learning features to rugby will be a challenge with many brand new players.

“We are moving some of our returning players in different positions to try them there,” explained Hyland.

“I think just learning the new positions is gonna be challenging in itself.”

“Very confident,” said  player Eligh Moorman.

“We have a lot of strong players, a lot of fast guys, a lot (of) strong guys. After growing … last year, I think this year we’re gonna have a really good chance (to) win.”

LCI won silver last year at Rugby 7s provincials and will look to win gold this year.

“This year we’re gonna shoot for first,” said Moorman.

LCI opens up their season against Chinook tomorrow.
